The Rollright Stones

The 'King's Men' stone circle

The Rollright stones are situated three miles north of Chipping Norton, west of the A34 in Oxfordshire. They consist of three groups, the 'King stone' which stands seperated by a road, 'The Whispering Knights', (5 stones) about one quarter of a mile from the main circle, 'The King's Men'.

The Rollright stones may not be as impressive as Stonehenge but have a timeless and mysterious quality all of their own. They date back to around 2000BC & are very well known now, so if you wish to visit and have the circle to yourself you will have to pick your moment. (There is a small charge of to enter the main circle which helps toward maintenance of the area)

Here is an extract taken from P. Reardon's book "Cotswold Driveabout" (Reardon Publishing)

"The legend surrounding the stones is that a witch met a king and his army whose intention it was to rule all of England. The witch, not being in fovour of this, made a bargain with him, that he take seven long strides and "if Long Compton thou can't see, King of England thou shalt be". Long Compton couldn't be seen from the seventh stride so the King, his men and the whispering Knights were all turned to stone."
