Crickley Hill is 6 miles east of Gloucester, just north of A417 (off the Air Balloon Public House roundabout). This 67 acres on the Cotswold escarpment is managed by Gloucestershire County Council and includes part of an iron aged hill fort (9 acres). Ramparts of 9 feet and a ditch of 8 feet with lesser works nearby including round barrows of which nothing of their contents are known. There is a map close to the car park detailing the fine views over the Severn Valley.
Most of the park is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), with a range of habitats from unimproved limestone grassland to mature beech woodland.
There is no doubt that there was conflict at Crickley Hill. Stone arrowheads and evidence of burning at Crickley Hill are direct signs of conflict. Large scale organisation would be needed to build the defences in violent times. Crickley Hill is also of major geological interest due to the limestone outcrops around its boundary. At Crickley Hill there are over 200 species of wild flower and 34 species of butterfly. LinkTo: Cotswold history
