Cheltenham to Painswick

On leaving the Cheltenham area, you will approach Leckhampton, around 2 miles outside Cheltenham town centre.

You will pass along Leckhampton hill on your walk. From here you will find some great views looking down on Cheltenham and across to the Malverns.

Features such as the famous 'Devils Chimney', below, are worth seeing along your walk, left here after the area was quarried for many years to help build the ever expanding spa town.

On route to Painswick, you'll pass through Ullenwood, then into Birdlip, lying on the Roman Road from Gloucester to Cirencester called Ermin Street.

Leckhampton Hill

Leaving Birdlip will bring you to Cranham, located at the head of a valley running north eastwards from Painswick. Continuing on with the walk for another three miles will bring you in to Painswick. Here you will find a peaceful little town, which, like many places in the Cotswolds benefited from the wool and cloth industry during the 17th and 18th century.
